Circe Launches – Est. 1973

Established in 1973 by Warren Marine (Pty) Ltd., Circe Launches is the original Seal Island Boat Trip Operator in Hout Bay. Our journey began with the transformation of two remarkable World War II boats, “Circe” and “R9,” originally air-sea rescue vessels. These 63-foot boats were meticulously refitted and replanked to meet the needs of our valued passengers. Their sturdy build made them the perfect vessels for our exhilarating trips from Hout Bay Harbour to the seal and sea bird colony at Duiker Island, effortlessly navigating any weather conditions along the way.

At Circe Launches, our experienced skippers undergo rigorous training for a minimum of 4 years before assuming command. Holding certifications for up to 200-ton vessels, our skippers far exceed the requirements for our ship’s tonnage. Rest assured, you are in the hands of capable professionals who prioritise your safety and enjoyment above all else.

Welcome on Board Calypso

In 2001, Circe Launches proudly unveiled our latest addition, the Calypso. This exceptional 82-foot passenger vessel was purposefully constructed to provide an unforgettable experience. Crafted with a robust steel hull, Calypso offers seating for over 100 passengers on deck, as well as ample indoor seating. What sets Calypso apart is its unique design, featuring two meter-square viewing ports at the boat’s bottom. Through these extraordinary windows, passengers can marvel at the enchanting kelp forests and abundant marine life that thrive beneath the ocean’s surface.

Calypso, measuring 22 meters in length and weighing 78 gross tons, was built at our workshop right here in Hout Bay. We specifically engineered our custom-built vessel to navigate the shallow waters and challenging conditions encountered during our seal island cruises. With a flawless track record spanning more than 50 years, Circe Launches prides itself on maintaining the utmost safety standards.

Being our flagship vessel, Calypso can carry up to 100 passengers. It boasts 50 comfortable seats indoors and an additional 100 seats outdoors, with 50 of them sheltered from the elements. Cruising at a comfortable speed of approximately 10 knots, efficiency and passenger comfort are our main priorities on our journey to the island. Powered by an impressive 1500hp Detroit Diesel engine, Calypso offers ample thrust, allowing us to maneuver in close proximity to the island and the playful seals that call it home.
